Category Display in Menu Module 7 Months, 4 Weeks ago

I have read both the documentation and the tutorial and cannot seem to figure out how to get the menu to link to a page that displays all of the categories I have created. If you choose category layout, it forces you to choose one category. But I would like to display the list of categories, then clicking on that link would take you to the items within that category.
I know it's possible because that's the way it's set up on the demo at Joomla.org.
What am I missing? It might have something to do with Category List / List vs Category / Item, but I CANNOT figure it out!
Any help would be greately appreciated.

Patricia McGuinness

Hi,
the first (and imo best) solution is to add a "dummy" root category and move all your categories into this dummy category. This has several advantages: you can have separated collections for different parts of your homepage and the new dummy root category is a real category with all category features.
The second solution is to simply _not_ select a category when adding the menu item, then the root will be used (like here in the "JCollection demo" menu entry). The disadvantage is that the root category is not a real category, i.e. it is more difficult to change the description, image, and so on.
HTH,
Thorsten.
